The first cases of influenza have appeared earlier than usual: doctors report an increase in visits
In Cyprus, influenza has appeared noticeably earlier this year. As reported by the director of the Medical Services of the Ministry of Health, Elizabeth Constantinou, 19 hospitalizations have been recorded since October, with one patient admitted to intensive care. Influenza A is predominant, and the number of cases has been gradually increasing over the past week.
At the same time, doctors note stable COVID-19 activity: since October, there have been 105 hospitalizations, with nine people treated in intensive care units. RSV levels remain low.
In the European Union, specialists are monitoring the new H3N2 “K” strain, which is already causing an increase in cases in neighboring countries. In Cyprus, health services say they are fully prepared: hospitals are stocked with supplies and updated protection guidelines will be released soon.
The main peak of influenza in Cyprus is traditionally expected after the New Year holidays.
