Car with 40 gas cylinders without documents detained at Agios Dometios checkpoint
The Cyprus Customs Service detained a 36-year-old Greek Cypriot after discovering a shipment of gas cylinders without accompanying documents at the Agios Dometios checkpoint.
The incident took place on May 25 during routine inspections carried out as part of checks to ensure compliance with the Green Line Regulation. Customs officers stopped a commercial vehicle and, during the search, found 40 gas cylinders in the cargo compartment.
According to the Customs Service, the driver was unable to provide documents for the goods being transported. Law enforcement officers suspected that the products had been brought in from Turkey in violation of the applicable rules.
As a result, the cylinders themselves were confiscated, and the commercial vehicle was also detained. The driver was held to clarify the circumstances of the case.
Later, the man was released following an out-of-court settlement — he agreed to pay a fine of 15,000 euros.
The confiscated cylinders were taken to the Customs Service warehouse in Nicosia. They will later be destroyed or handed over for recycling to a specialized licensed company.
Authorities emphasize that checks at the «green line» crossing points continue in enhanced mode in order to prevent the illegal import of goods and protect the domestic market.
