May Became One of the Rainiest in Recent Years in Cyprus
Cyprus has recorded an unusually high amount of rainfall: as of May 25, precipitation had reached 220% of the monthly climate norm. In several areas, figures exceeded average values by more than three times. According to meteorological data, since the beginning of May an average of 43.2 millimeters of precipitation has fallen in the Republic of Cyprus, compared with a norm of 19.6 millimeters.
The most significant excess of the norm was recorded in the area of Paphos Airport, where rainfall reached 394% of the average May figure. In Polis Chrysochous, 375% of the norm fell, in the Stavros Psokas area 364%, and at the new port of Limassol 360%.
The highest amount of rainfall since the beginning of the month was recorded in Stavros Psokas, where 99 millimeters of rain fell. The driest area was Larnaca Airport, with just 13.6 millimeters.
The total amount of precipitation since the start of the hydrological year — from October 1 — also exceeds the seasonal norm. On average across the island, the figure reached 116% of the usual level. During this period, 566.3 millimeters of precipitation fell, compared with a norm of 487 millimeters.
Experts note that such a high level of rainfall helps improve the situation with water resources and the filling of reservoirs after several dry seasons. At the same time, forecasters warn that unstable weather may continue in the coming days.
