“The holiday is here, but there is no joy”: TRNC residents complain about high prices in the middle of Bayram
The holiday days of Eid al-Adha are in full swing in Northern Cyprus, yet the usual bustle has still not appeared in local markets and shops. Journalistic surveys conducted at the capital’s markets, including Bandabuliya, show that the public’s purchasing power has fallen sharply because of high inflation.
Shopkeepers say demand is extremely low during these holiday days. Despite the abundance of goods on the stalls, there are few customers, and people are limiting themselves to buying only the most basic products. Local residents note that, because of the sharp rise in prices, family budgets this year did not allow for the traditional lavish holiday tables.
