Cyprus Negotiators to Meet Again Next Week Ahead of Leaders' Talks

Negotiators from the two communities of Cyprus — Güneş Onar, the Special Representative of the Turkish Cypriot leader, and Menelaos Menelaou, the Greek Cypriot negotiator — will meet early next week. The meeting will take place ahead of the scheduled talks between the two community leaders, set for May 5.

Their agenda includes discussions on the potential opening of new crossing points and the proposed construction of a solar power plant in the buffer zone.

At their previous meeting on April 2, Ersin Tatar and Nikos Christodoulides agreed to establish a joint youth committee, resume discussions on mine clearance at the negotiator level, and explore initiatives related to climate change and environmental protection.

The two leaders also asked their representatives to continue talks on opening additional crossings and to assess the feasibility of building a solar energy facility in the buffer zone.

According to local media, some progress has been made on implementing confidence-building measures between the communities. However, significant disagreements remain — particularly concerning the opening of new checkpoints.
